Nature's Comforting Continuity

"I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order."

-John Burroughs, Author

What is it about nature, especially right now during these unprecedented, anxious and isolating days of COVID-19 pandemic, that comforts us? Is it the beauty? Is it the Vitamin D from the sunshine? Is it the warmth for some where spring has already sprung? But then what drives those of us still dealing with the last bits of winter outside into the cold and wind?

Nature is ever changing just like our current world; in fact sometimes it changes even faster than the updates on the increasing numbers of cases of COVID-19. And nature certainly isn't predictable or stable, so those can't be the reasons we're seeking her.

I believe we're seeking out nature because in spite of our human worries, nature continues to be herself in all her wild, unpredictable, non-judgmental ways. The rest of our world has changed - that which we created: businesses, processes, habits, rules and structure - but nature is still going on, unrestricted by social distancing, flattening the curve and handwashing protocols. She's continuing on with spring, shoots of green grass, clouds with rain and snow, stars at night and the moon moving through its phases. Nature continues regardless of our human foibles and worries.

Nature continues providing us the smell of the spring soil, the song of the returning bluebirds, the feel of the sun's warmth, the tartness of ruby red rhubarb and the sight of budding trees against cobalt blue skies. And that is soothing and comforting in these uncertain times.

May you find soothing and healing in nature, and, once your senses are in order, a peace of mind.
